I am a guitarist, most often associated with jazz, who has been described as ‘cross-genre’. I play as an unaccompanied fingerstyle soloist and with my ‘power jazz trio’ the Matt Richards Group.
I am involved in several duos:
– with flutist Katherine Barbato (jazz/ Brazilian/ classical)
– with guitarist Tony Hughes (all jazz, all the time)
– with vocalist Jay Katz (mostly jazz, most likely more)
– with vocalist Arlyn Wolters (going in a different direction)
I’ll also be working with a jazz guitar trio (three guitars, all at once) that includes Frank Butrey and Richard Tucker and an optional rhythm section.
I do guest with other artists, most recently the Philly Blues Kings.
I’m beginning work on my sixth CD, Balance, an all-solo-guitar project, and have recordings in the works with a number of the projects. I play Godin guitars (including their fretless glissentar) and mid-70s Hagstrom electrics. I also teach guitar and music both privately and in workshops and now offer lessons via Skype.
